Beginning tomorrow, we roll out what has turned into a long and arduous process-- a new promotion system for non-faculty. It was modeled on the faculty's system and allows individuals to be promoted up to two times with a title change and pay raise after each.
We hired a consultant to help design the process, but she did not really understand us well enough to accomplish her task without a lot of help. Therefore, what I had hoped would take a few months turned into over a year.
Because I have championed this idea from the start, I will participate in each of the three informational sessions. These sessions are to disseminate information and to gather feedback to ensure that the system will work.
I hope that this new approach, which recognizes good service outside of the merit system, will be embraced by our employees. I am still smarting that a number of employees did not like the Code Green system which was designed to provide employees with a nice summer perk and save the college money at the same time.

Dr. Gottfried,
ReplyDeleteThank you for your time and interest in improving our current advancement process at CSM. I look forward to taking part in the program.
I would like to comment on the follow-up meeting we had which was the State of the College. More specifically the Federal Governments funding of the Community College through the state.
The media is constantly reporting how the Community College is invaluable to the education of our recent High School graduates and the continuing education of the learning adult. In fact, President Obama has made several public comments and supposedly put feet to words about funding the community colleges of the United States. Here is an acticle reposted by Mrs. Biden, http://chronicle.com/article/Jill-Biden-Reasserts-Obama/63755/
I am judging from your statement on Tuesday, that the funds that supposedly ear-marked for the Community Colleges seem to have been distributed to the University's. Is this true? or has the Federal Government not followed through with the funds it has proposed to supply?
Dr. Gottfried,
ReplyDeleteIt seems funny to me that you are putting a program in effect to promote non-faculty when you don't want many of the faculty you have now. I was at CSM for almost 2 years and asked to do 3-4 hours a week from home for a bit since I had just had a baby last September. Let me say that 85% of my job could be done from a computer at home or anywhere else. I was denied even after many attempts to try and workout something with my boss to stay. I filed a grievance which was partially ignored too. I tried to use the telecommuting program (I live 70 min away from La Plata) or flexible work hours and do the hours on a Saturday at either LEO or PRIN and was still denied. I have always done great work which my co-workers will agree with. I find it ironic that the person (LaRue Cook) is working all of his hours from home now. Way to keep employees who really enjoyed working at CSM, did a great job working, and did everything in my power to stay.
